May 7 & 14, 2020
Just like any crisis situation, managing the current pandemic involves a lot of communication – which sometimes requires interpreting services too. At the beginning of May, Prof. Emilian Popovici, who is Vice-President of the Romanian Society of Epidemiology and Head of the Epidemiology Department at the "Victor Babeș" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara, organized an online briefing session for his foreign students.
As a front-line specialist involved in the national COVID-19 control strategy, he wanted to give his students insight into the state of play and the possible future trends. He teaches classes in English, but this time he preferred to have an interpreter, so he asked me to participate. Given the social distancing requirements, the briefing session was in the form of a Zoom meeting.
I accepted, of course, and it all went very smoothly - so smoothly, that we did a follow-up session a week later.
It was my first online interpreting experience and I was quite impressed with Zoom's audio quality. I was also glad for this new chance to work with Prof. Emilian Popovici, adding to our great cooperation that has been going on since 2007.
